I turned my phone off and powered up the laptop. I planned on just staying in tonight and researching the topics to see if I could figure out what I wanted to write about. On second thought I will look up this mayor and see what he’s about. I typed in his name in the google search engine and started reading the various links that popped up. I was amazed at how popular and well liked this particular politician was. Hmm, maybe my mom is going to be okay with him. He seems legit and like an actual good guy. As I was about to leave the page with all the links of what the mayor had been up to something caught my eye. There was an article about the mayor and some disgruntled city officials. I clicked on it and began to read the article:
Mayor Wilkes in constant disagreement with his deputy mayors
Mayor Wilkes has been said to have been “fighting” with his deputy mayors lately, over all sorts of issues ranging from equality rights to changes within the city. Mayor Wilkes is set to change some wages at local and rural companies for women to bump the wages up to what men are currently making at these jobs. Wilkes has said in previous interviews that he would like everyone to be able to afford to live with the constant costs of living increasing. Wilkes is also fighting for equal rights for the first time in Texas history. Austin is among several US cities with a large community of LGBT residents that would like to see their day in court. The current deputy mayors have let it be known that they are not voting for these rights to pass and will fight him every step of the way. Marriage rights has been a big issue in Austin for several years now. Equal rights and wage increases were Wilkes’s strongest campaign pushers that got him elected as mayor of Austin.
Wow, so he was really trying to do something good with this city. I was amazed. I wondered how it would play out though. If the news was correct about them fighting over the changes he wanted to make, I wondered how far his deputies would go to keep things the same. I finished my internet searches about him and decided to pick a topic as I set out to do originally. I decided to write about the history of women’s rights and how far we have come. I decided after reading the article about the changes he was trying to make I could incorporate some of that into my paper. I spent the majority of my evening writing my rough draft and I decided to call it a night. I felt like I accomplished a lot and I also had the idea to see if I could interview the mayor since he would be over to take my mom out. I was actually looking forward to meeting him.
