PRESENT DAY
She ran with her all might, afraid that she was going to get caught with the files in her hand. She ran until her lungs started burning and as bad as she wanted to stop she knew if they caught her she would be dead. She now had the evidence to prove that her mom was innocent. She could hear the footsteps increasing behind her and a man yelling for her to stop. I didn’t dare look back for fear that he would be in reach. My chest was so heavy and my breathing was out of control. I wished I had my inhaler, but I knew it was life or death and I had to keep going. I was so close to my car and to a freedom I didn’t realize I had taken for granted. I had another twenty five feet and I could be on my way to the police department. I had just reached my car and was clicking the remote to unlock it when he grabbed my hair and slammed me into the car window.
“Agh, let me go '' I held onto the files and fought as hard as I could. He continued to push me head first into the car. He didn't speak, he was too busy trying to shatter my skull. He pushed me into the car for a third time and everything went black. I woke up hours later in a basement tied up to a chair, as blood trailed down my face. My head was throbbing and I had no idea where I was. I just knew I had limited time to get to the police to get my mom’s charges dropped. She was being framed for attempted murder on the mayor. My mom was a housewife who had one child and my dad left us when I was a baby. Someone chose her to take the fall for their failed attempted murder. The question was why? My mom was the nicest woman you would ever meet. I was the only one that knew the truth and I had the proof until the unknown man bashed my head into my window. The files detailed the plan to kill the mayor, and who should take the fall for it. All the politicians were dirty, but the mayor was actually trying to promote some positive changes in the city. My mind was racing as I tried to figure out where I was based on the sounds I could hear outside. I could hear the train nearby, and I could hear music. Which told me I was in the city, but which building. I struggled against my restraints but they weren’t budging at all. Above me I could hear a lot of footsteps, and someone speaking in another language. Suddenly, the conversation switched to English and they sounded as if they were right above me.
“I think we have to kill her, we can’t let her go she knows too much”
“ Is anyone looking for her?”
“No, not that I know of, I can check with my contact in the APD”
“ You do that now! I need to know before we make a decision about her”
“Boss, I really think she needs to be eliminated..” Silence hung in the air as those words were spoken. The other man appeared to be thinking about it.
“Like I said before, not until we know for sure if she is considered “missing”. Did anyone move her car from the parking lot?” Who are these men? I couldn’t place their voices. I definitely didn’t know them. The fact that they had an inside person in the police department scared me shitless, I was in more danger than I thought I was.
“Yes, her car was taken care of. VIN was filed down so they can’t trace the owner and we burned the plates.”
“Good, let me know what you find out after you leave the station.” I could hear the man walk away to go do his boss’s bidding. I wish I knew where I heard that voice, but with my head throbbing I was no good to myself.
